Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of approach shafts leading to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," he added. "Including them were a great many British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN says Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
