EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
