Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users buying such treatments must be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly starving," said an individual.

The struggle is compounded if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
