Together Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional body horror, but within Together resides a profound contemplation about our choices in loving one another.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The story commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the country for her career. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He fears the idea of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple confront the sort of issues that come with long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
